Troubleshooting

Why Does a Metric Say 'No Data'?

Understand why pinned metrics show 'No Data' and how to fix it.

If you see a "No Data" card on your Home screen for a metric you've pinned, it means Sunu could not find any recent readings for that specific metric in your Apple Health app.

Common Reasons for "No Data"

No Recent Measurements

What it means:

  • You haven't recorded that metric recently
  • No data exists within the timeframe displayed
  • The metric requires manual entry

Examples:

  • Haven't weighed yourself recently
  • Haven't taken blood pressure
  • Haven't logged water intake
  • No recent blood glucose readings

Solution: Record a measurement for that metric, then pull to refresh in Sunu.

Data Source Not Synced

What it means:

  • The device or app that collects the data hasn't synced to Apple Health yet
  • Data exists but hasn't transferred

Common scenarios:

  • Smart scale hasn't uploaded weight
  • Blood pressure cuff app not opened
  • Fitness tracker not synced
  • Third-party app pending sync

Solution:

Step 1: Open the device's companion app (e.g., scale app, BP monitor app)

Step 2: Ensure it's connected and syncing

Step 3: Force a sync if the app offers that option

Step 4: Verify data appears in Apple Health app

Step 5: Pull to refresh in Sunu

Permissions Not Granted

What it means:

  • Sunu doesn't have permission to read that specific metric
  • Category is disabled in Health settings

How to check:

Step 1: Settings > Health > Data Access & Devices > Sunu

Step 2: Scroll to find the specific metric

Step 3: Ensure toggle is ON

Step 4: Return to Sunu and pull to refresh

Device Doesn't Track This Metric

What it means:

  • Your device isn't capable of measuring this metric
  • No source is providing the data

Examples:

  • iPhone without Apple Watch can't track VO₂ Max
  • Older Apple Watches don't measure blood oxygen
  • iPhone alone can't track sleep stages accurately

Solution: Either get a compatible device, or unpin metrics your devices can't measure.

Metric-Specific Troubleshooting

Heart Rate Shows "No Data"

Check:

  • Is Apple Watch worn on wrist?
  • Is Watch snug but comfortable?
  • Is Watch charged and paired?
  • Background heart rate enabled in Watch app?

Fix:

  • Wear Watch properly
  • Settings > Privacy > Health > Heart Rate (on Watch)
  • Ensure background measurements enabled

Sleep Shows "No Data"

Check:

  • Is sleep tracking enabled?
  • Did you wear Watch to bed?
  • Is sleep schedule set up?
  • Is third-party sleep app syncing?

Fix:

  • Enable Sleep Focus and Sleep tracking
  • Wear Watch during sleep
  • Use Health app's Sleep feature
  • Or ensure third-party app has permissions

Steps Show "No Data"

Check:

  • Did you carry iPhone today?
  • Is Motion & Fitness enabled?
  • Is iPhone functioning normally?

Fix:

  • Carry iPhone when walking
  • Settings > Privacy > Motion & Fitness > Enable
  • Grant permission to Health app

Weight Shows "No Data"

Check:

  • When did you last weigh yourself?
  • Does scale sync to Health automatically?
  • Did you manually log weight in Health app?

Fix:

  • Weigh yourself (with connected scale or manually)
  • Open scale's app to sync
  • Or add manually in Health app
  • Pull to refresh in Sunu

Blood Pressure Shows "No Data"

Check:

  • When did you last take measurement?
  • Does your BP cuff sync to Health?
  • Did you log manually?

Fix:

  • Take blood pressure reading
  • Ensure BP monitor app syncs to Health
  • Or manually enter in Health app
  • Pull to refresh in Sunu

What to Do About "No Data"

Tap the Card for Guidance

Step 1: Tap on the "No Data" card

Step 2: You'll see a detail screen with:

  • Explanation of the metric
  • How to add data
  • Suggestions for tracking
  • Links to relevant settings

Step 3: Follow the suggestions provided

Add Data Manually

For metrics that need manual entry:

Step 1: Open the Health app

Step 2: Search for the metric

Step 3: Tap "Add Data"

Step 4: Enter the value and time

Step 5: Tap "Add"

Step 6: Pull to refresh in Sunu

Connect a Data Source

For automated tracking:

Step 1: Get compatible device (scale, BP monitor, etc.)

Step 2: Install the device's app

Step 3: Connect device to app

Step 4: Grant app permission to write to Health

Step 5: Take measurement

Step 6: Verify it appears in Health

Step 7: Pull to refresh in Sunu

Understanding Data Recency

What "Recent" Means

For different metrics:

  • Continuous metrics (heart rate, steps): Last few hours
  • Daily metrics (weight, BP): Last 7 days
  • Sleep data: Last night's session
  • Workouts: Last 7 days

If data is older: May show as "No Data" even if historical data exists.

Unpin Unused Metrics

If You Don't Track a Metric

Consider unpinning:

Step 1: Tap the pin icon on Home tab

Step 2: Deselect metrics you don't track

Step 3: Tap "Save"

Why unpin:

  • Cleaner Home screen
  • Focus on relevant metrics
  • Less visual clutter
  • Better user experience

Historical Data vs. Recent Data

Why Old Data Doesn't Show

Sunu prioritizes recent data:

  • Home screen shows current status
  • Not a historical archive
  • Focus on what's happening now

To view old data:

  • Go to History tab
  • Filter by specific metric
  • View trend charts
  • See all historical readings

Device-Specific Issues

Apple Watch Not Recording

Common fixes:

  • Restart Apple Watch
  • Ensure Watch OS is updated
  • Check Watch is paired correctly
  • Verify wrist detection is on
  • Ensure Watch is charged

Third-Party App Issues

Troubleshooting:

  • Update the app to latest version
  • Check app's Health permissions
  • Force quit and reopen the app
  • Check if app's service is working
  • Contact app's support if needed

Smart Scale or Device Issues

Common problems:

  • WiFi connection dropped
  • Device needs battery replacement
  • App not opened recently
  • Account logged out

Solutions:

  • Reconnect to WiFi
  • Replace batteries
  • Open app and force sync
  • Re-login to account

Verifying Data in Health App

Always Check Health App First

Why this matters:

  • Sunu reads from Health app
  • If data isn't in Health, Sunu can't show it
  • Health app is the source of truth

How to verify:

Step 1: Open Health app

Step 2: Browse to the category

Step 3: Look for recent data

If data in Health but not Sunu:

  • Check Sunu's permissions
  • Pull to refresh in Sunu
  • Restart Sunu app

If no data in Health:

  • Problem is with data source
  • Not a Sunu issue
  • Fix the source first

Prevention Tips

Consistent Tracking

Build habits:

  • Daily weigh-ins
  • Regular BP checks
  • Wear devices consistently
  • Log manually if needed

Check Devices Regularly

Maintenance:

  • Ensure devices are charged
  • Verify connections
  • Update apps when available
  • Test sync occasionally

Keep Apps Updated

Stay current:

  • Update Sunu
  • Update Health-connected apps
  • Update iOS
  • Update device firmware

📱 Quick Test

To test if data is flowing correctly: Take a measurement with a connected device, open its app to ensure it syncs to Health, verify it appears in the Health app, then pull to refresh in Sunu. This confirms the entire data pipeline is working.

💡 Pro Tip

If you consistently see "No Data" for a metric you've pinned but don't actually track, simply unpin it! Only pin metrics you measure regularly. You can always re-pin it later if you start tracking that metric.
